A/W '12 Trend Guide Part 1- Ain't Nothin' but a Goth Thing!

I have been counting down the days til we could put the big ol mess that was Spring Summer fashion behind us and start shopping for my favourite season Autumn (if I had to look at one more Aztec print neon crop top I was going to hurl myself off a bridge.) I couldn't help but think that the range plans on the high street for S/S was more geared to a younger shoppers and I felt like a teeny bopper ever time I walked through New Look. Thankfully A/W is looking far more chic, in a darkly glamorous way judging by the catwalk.

You might as well start throwing all your neon, pastel and wildly printed items into the back of the wardrobe because it doesn't look like they'll be seeing the light of day anytime soon unless it's to be thrown into a bucket of black dye. Black doesn't have to be boring though as these texture rich collections prove, lace, leather, brocade and velvet, I just want to start touching it all! Accessories wise, we're looking at crucifixes, skulls and rubies, leather gloves and lace up boots (don't forget your cloud of bats!). Finishing off the look with center parted hair, dramatic dark lips and flawless pale skin, get your goth on!

Style Inspiration - Number 1

Hi! Hope you all had a messy bank holiday weekend.

I have been in a style rut since I haven't been up to much lately apart from lazing around my house and those of my friends in baggy t-shirts and leggings, maybe a pair of denim shorts if I'm feeling energetic. This needs to stop and I'm dying for a drastically different look so I took to the internet (where else) for inspiration. I've decided to share with you guys who's style I'm into (this week at least).

Kreayshawn & Lil'Debbie

You either love them or you hate them. I have been girl crushing on the WGM (White Girl Mob) for some time now. I know a lot of people see them as a joke but there's not doubt that these ladies know how to pull together a look. Think school girl x 90's Bay Area + hipster tattoos + a hell of a lot of gold jewelry = white thrash girlo rap? However you want to describe it, it's a hard look to pull off but I'm absolutely fanatical about it. Especially Natassia's new hair in her new video "Go Hard". The whole WGM make an appearance, does that mean they're not fighting anymore?

This is England 

One of my favourite movies and fashion movements of all time, I watched it again the other day and like every other time, I wanted to don my Dr Martens and shave my head. Thankfully the hair shears were no where to be found, that is not to say when This is England 90 comes out (EEEP!) I won't be tempted again. Everything in this film from the soundtrack to the cinematography inspires me and I think the whole cast, different as they may be, offer inspiration from a fashion perspective. My favourites are Milky, Harvey and Titch. Bomber jackets, bleached denim, braces and a overload of Fred Perry and Ben Sherman at the ready!

Courtney Love & Frances Bean Cobain

Craaaaaaazy Courtney.  Sometimes she gets it wrong, oh so very wrong, but when the original queen of grunge gets it right it's stellar! Even when I was trying to source pictures for this post the most appalling ones were coming up and I started to doubt including her but then I remembered that she's always been herself, through her music, clothes and controversial speeches and to me that is what style is about, being yourself and not giving a fuck if other people think you're loopers. She has certainty influenced a lot of current musicians and women of the fashion world (Taylor Momsen GO HOME!) and for that Courtney I salute you!

Her daughter Frances Bean Cobain is a different kettle of fish entirely. Someone anonymously compared me to her on the internet before and I DIED. This young lady is basically rock royalty but judging by her first round of modelling pictures it won't be long before she's famous in her own right.

THOSE EYEBROWS. Flowers in her hair, jewel toned silks, moody cigarettes holding poses, crisp white lace, brodaire anglais and collars. Just yes.

Kate Foley

Kate Foley is head buyer at Opening Ceremony so you know she's going to be so stylish it's hurts. Ranked number 11 in Complex's 50 most stylish people in New York right now, I have fallen head over heels in love with her. You know that naturally stunning girl that everyone bitches about but secretly wants to be? That's Kate Foley. You know that girl that can walk blindly into her wardrobe, put on anything and emerge looking like God's gift to fashion? That's Kate Foley. Casual yet impeccably polished at the same time this girl has her finger on the pulse of fashion but she's still giving it her own twist. Bow down.

Where do you get your style inspiration?

Cinderella must go to the ball! - Top 10 Debs dresses

As another very expensive time for girls around my age is coming up, I've decided to do a post on the debs, whether if be your own or you are the arm candy for some lucky guy (or lady). If you haven't got your dress already, my heart goes out to you! I was in the exact same boat last year for my own debs and was so panicked that I thought it was the end of the world. I find that Ireland do a very limited selection of formal dresses at affordable prices if you're not into the diamante riddled, cleavage bearing cut out frocks that will result in your nana refusing to get in the family picture with you. All is not lost fortunately, with more and more Irish girls choosing to buy their dresses online on websites such as ASOS (who do next day free delivery FYI) I've decided to do my top ten debs dress available online that will leave you money to get wrecked on jagerbombs and forget about all your dress stressin!

My dress was from here and my amazing best friend Sarah did my hair and I did my own make up. I had an absolutely amazing night and I've a friend's debs this month so I can't wait to do it all again! 

Tips!

1. When shopping for your dress keep in mind that this picture is going to hang in your mother's living room and (hopefully not) haunt you for the rest of your life, so try to pick a classic style of dress. Whatever the current style in fashion maybe just keep that in mind because in a few years time you won't want to die of mortification at what you wore to your debs (confirmation outfits were bad enough!)

2. Invite someone that you're going to have a good time with. I can't imagine anything worse than spending the whole night of the debs with someone who is dull and isn't up for the traditional carry on of shots, shameful dancing and lending you his jacket when you're falling asleep circa 4 AM. Also do you really want to bring someone that's going to get locked and make a show of you by getting wasted and as a result getting sick on your dress? If in doubt bring a friend, male or female. Lots of girls bring other girls dressed up in the female equivalent of a tux and it looks great!

3. Do you own make up! You've been doing it for years and you know what suits you and what doesn't! I had a make up trial at the Benefit counter in Wexford a few days before the debs (along with eyelash extensions, one word, DISASTER) and I ended up looking like a man in drag, a tangerine faced one at that! So I scrapped the whole lot and spent the money that I would have paid to have my make up done on a MAC lipstick and a NAKED pallet and was much more comfortable with how I looked as a result.

4. Don't get too drunk before arriving at the hotel for your meal and pictures. We're young and we're Irish and for most of us our priority for the debs is to get smashed and have a great night but do you really want to be that girl that pukes at the dinner table and has her eyes closed in all the pictures for the local paper? There's plenty of time for drunken debauchery when you have that out of the way!

5. Don't stress out too much. Make sure you have plenty of time to get ready and book your hair, nails and tan appointments (if you're that way inclined) so that you'll have plenty of time to get everything ready. It's for you to enjoy yourself and you only get to have your own debs once so make the most of it!
